Major Arcana

The 22 archetypal stages — Fool to World.

The Major Arcana are the twenty-two trumps. Unlike the four suits — which read like weather, the small atmospheric pressures of a daily life — the Majors read like geography. They are the territory itself: the landscape a soul moves through. When a Major Arcana card lands in a spread, the moment is rarely small. It is a turning, a vow, a threshold, a long initiation that began before you noticed and will end after you do.

Read in order, the twenty-two trace a single arc: from The Fool (the first step) through The Magician (the first power), past the Empress and Emperor (the first mother and father), through Strength, the Hermit, and the Wheel (the inner life and the outer turning), into Death and the Tower (the necessary endings), and finally to the Star, the Moon, the Sun (the slow healing) and the World (the wholeness on the other side). Every life walks this path. Most lives walk it more than once.

A note on the Majors: their weight is their gift. A spread with no Majors is a small forecast — a week, a phone call, a decision about lunch. A spread with three Majors is a year, a marriage, a vocation, a reckoning. When the Majors arrive, the reading is no longer about tactics. It is about who you are becoming.
