Eight of Wands

The Arrows in Flight

Eight wands fly through clear air over a peaceful landscape. They are airborne, parallel, headed somewhere. The image is the only one in the minor arcana with no human figure. The wands are doing the work.

Classical readings call this speed, and the more useful frame is momentum in motion. The Eight of Wands is what happens after the Seven was held and the way opened. Things move. News arrives. Decisions that have been pending suddenly land. The card is rarely about you doing more; it is about events accelerating in response to work that has already been done.

Reversed, the same arrows fall. Delays, miscommunications, the frustration of momentum lost or never gathered. The shadow is the project that should be moving and isn't — usually because some earlier card was skipped.

When the Eight of Wands appears, the reading is often suggesting that what you have been waiting on is in motion. Don't add more wands. Let these ones land. Speed is not always virtue, but when it arrives, it asks to be respected.

A single card, eight in flight.
