Six of Pentacles

The Fair Exchange

A wealthy merchant holds scales in one hand and gives coins to two kneeling beggars with the other. The scales are level; the giving is measured. The card is not pure altruism — it is the conscious balancing of giving and receiving in a system where some have more than others.

Classical readings call this charity, and the more useful frame is fair exchange. The Six of Pentacles is the part of practical life where wealth circulates — through generosity, mentorship, tithing, helping. The honesty of the card is that it acknowledges the power difference between giver and receiver, and asks that the giving be done without making the receiver pay in dignity.

Reversed, the same scale tilts. Generosity with strings attached, "help" that comes with expectations. Or its opposite — the persistent inability to receive, which keeps the receiver from accepting what is freely offered.

When the Six of Pentacles appears, the reading is often inviting an audit of your role in the exchange. Are you giving what is yours to give? Are you receiving with grace what is being offered? The scale wants to stay level.

A single card, one measured hand.
