Two of Swords

The Held Stalemate

A blindfolded figure sits on a low bench, two crossed swords held over her chest, a moon and a calm sea behind. The blindfold is by choice. She is not yet ready to look.

Classical readings call this indecision or stalemate, and the more useful phrase is the held position. The Two of Swords is the moment when two opposing truths or commitments are being kept in balance — and the blindfold is the not-yet-looking that allows the balance to hold. Sometimes this is wise patience. Sometimes it is the avoidance of a decision the situation will eventually force.

Reversed, the blindfold comes off. The information that was being kept at bay arrives. The stalemate breaks — sometimes with a sigh, sometimes with a shock. The shadow is the choice that was avoided so long it ended up being made by default.

When the Two of Swords appears, the reading is often pointing at the cost of continuing to not look. The bench is comfortable enough; the swords are heavy. At some point the figure will need both hands free.
