Wands

The suit of fire — creativity, will, and inspiration.

Wands is the suit of fire. It carries the active, kindling, creative energy of life — the spark behind a project, the will behind an action, the desire that gets a person out of bed before the alarm rings. When a Wands card lands in a spread, the question is usually about momentum: what is being lit, what is being burned, and what is being defended.

The fourteen Wands cards trace a small fire. The Ace is the match struck. The Two is the vision — a small flame held in the hand, surveying possible kingdoms. The Three is the ships sent out. The Five is the small fight. The Eight is news arriving fast. The Ten is the weight of carrying everything you wanted, after you wanted it. The court — Page, Knight, Queen, King — are four ways of being on fire: the messenger with the spark in their eye, the knight at full gallop, the warm woman who keeps everyone's flame, the king who is the fire and is unafraid of it.

A note on reading Wands: the suit's shadow is *exhaustion*. Fire that is never tended to either burns out or burns the house. Wands asks you to honour your creative life by feeding it real fuel — and by letting it rest.
